  • After a welcome from Ken Purslow, those of us who had travelled from foreign parts (Cristina Ceron from Verona, Monika Coghen from Krakow, Mirka Horova from Prague and myself from Cologne) were presented with Nottinghamshire County Council handbag mirrors by a representative of the County Council: now we can think of Byron every time we have to touch up our lipstick! [...]after a lovely dinner in the Riverside Restaurant, where we were also able to enjoy the views of a beautiful sunset over the River Trent, we were treated to after-dinner entertainment in the shape of John Beckett who gave a fascinating talk entitled 'Sir Julien Cahn, Saviour of Newstead: Myth or Reality'. After our final coffee break, David Herbert (Newstead Abbey Byron Society) took us out of our European doom and gloom to give us some interesting insights into the identity of the White Lady of Newstead, a little old woman called Sophia Hyatt. [...]after more interesting discussions (and with the dog's skull still gracing the table) the successful conference was brought to a close as Ken Purslow thanked all the participants, along with Peter Cochran, Carl Thompson, David Worrall and Maureen Crisp for their help in organising the event.
