In his book The Age of Reform (1955), for example, nineteenth-century populist figures demonstrated the dangers that McCarthyism presented during Hofstadter's time, and Franklin D. Roosevelt constructed the New Deal as the strong but tentative and nonideological liberalism Hofstadter wished for during the Cold War. Liberals today might want to revisit the idea of consensus, especially as a prompt to a search for a common good and ethic of comity, as opposed to emphasizing small-group identity-in a world in which religious and ethnic factionalisms imperil freedoms. Or consider the tension between tentative and absolutist thought, the latter of which Hofstadter strongly opposed after encountering it as a member of the Communist party unit at Columbia while a graduate student there.
