Common to both works is the argument that music theory should ground itself in cognitive science; however, GTTM invests more along these lines than does Explaining Tonality.1 In addition, both works reconsider some of Schenker's assumptions and conclusions in light of research in cognition.2 While sharing these general characteristics with GTTM, Explaining Tonality makes a point of separating itself as well, as is evident in three points of comparison.
