Chen discusses why the British's view of Chinese civilization changed from one admiration of contempt in the last decade of 18th-century. He examines the accounts of George Macartney's embassy to argue that the language of class, more than any other factor, sparked a reevaluation of Chinese culture among British intellectuals. He also argues that the the reevaluation of Chinese society was received favorably by critics who wished to reinforce hierarchical models of class politics as a means to counter growing pressures for reform in the wake of the French Revolution.
