• Responses from various individuals concerning the state of Hmong American and diaspora studies are discussed. According to Gary Yia Lee, who was born in Laos and lives in Australia, Hmong Americans/diaspora studies are to a large extent determined by the number of researchers and writers who operate in particular areas of expertise. Due to prevalence of Hmong academics in the field of education and health/mental health, for example, 29 articles out of a total of 105 published in the Hmong Studies Journal from 1996 to 2018 focus on education, 30 on health or mental health, and 31 on various social issues such as state political participation, gender, demographic trends, migration and settlement adjustment.
