After enactment of a law in Scotland that prohibited smoking in public places, the number of hospital admissions for acute coronary syndrome decreased by 17%. The decrease was greater among persons who had never smoked than among smokers, suggesting that the reduction in passive smoking had a public health benefit.
After enactment of a law in Scotland that prohibited smoking in public places, the number of hospital admissions for acute coronary syndrome decreased by 17%.
The Smoking, Health and Social Care Act, which was passed in 2005, prohibited smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces in Scotland after the end of March 2006. Smoke-free legislation aims to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke, but it may also reduce the risk among smokers because of reduced smoking or increased smoking cessation.
