The Early MHG 'Kaiserchronik' (c. 1147) is far more than a pioneer of vernacular German chronicle writing. Popular until the end of the Middle Ages, this anonymous text marks the beginning of a variety of literary developments and new, flourishing forms of narrative. This article explores the impact of the 'Kaiserchronik', taking in account various generic concepts. The literary and narrative continuities that are initiated by the 'Kaiserchronik' (as a whole or in parts and episodes) have different qualities and correspond to different criteria, but in broad terms it is possible to identify the text as an extraordinarily influential and effective work that bridges the gap between pre-courtly Early MHG literature and the vivid plurality of forms and genres in later courtly literature, both fictional and factual.
