Tremendous progress has been made in reducing global mortality in children younger than age five from ninety-three deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990 to thirty-nine in 2017-a 58 percent decline- according to the United Nations. This can be attributed to concerted action to reduce poverty; improve access to clean water and sanitation; improve women's access to reproductive health services; scale up front-line management of childhood killers such as pneumonia, malaria, and diarrheal diseases; and improve coverage with effective vaccines to prevent deaths from rotavirus, pneumonia, meningitis, measles, and other lethal infections. One of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to reduce under-five mortality to twenty-five deaths per 1,000 live births, and the world would be on track were it not for the lagging progress in reducing newborn mortality (defined as death in the first twenty-eight days of life).
