Block presents an analysis of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Italian journeys and his education in what will emerge as the logic of substitution. That is, as Goethe surveyed a dissolute and politically disabled land, he learned to post an ideal in the space of absence, to substitute Weimar culture for an absent Hellenic one. He concludes with an excursion into that one book whose "and" of the title marks, the entire question of this project: Moses Hess' Rome and Jerusalem.
