- Culler comments that Neil Hertz, a great raconteur with an ironic sense of humor, seems a most unlikely theorist of the sublime, in the line of Longinus, Burke, and Kant. Here, he traces Hertz's persistent paradoxical fascination with the sublime and its attendant moments of violence, domination, blockage, and dispossession, over a long trajectory, from his readings of Longinus forty years ago, to discussions of Kant, Wordsworth, Freud, and George Eliot's Pulse and Victorian narrative.
