• Like the subculture of Mardi Gras Indians that has crossed over to tourist culture only in the past generation, the black expressive culture of New Orleans remains overexposed and underanalyzed.1 If it is known at all, the term second line calls forth the jaunty gestures of buzzed, middle-aged Jazz Festers getting their New Orleans freak on. Since Katrina, year after year a lazy news media recycles familiar images, and for Jazz Fest, there's always an iconic shot of men in Hawaiian shirts and women in long skirts pointing flower-print umbrellas at the sky while half-spinning in a muddy line-dance to traditional New Orleans songs played by brass bands in military uniform.
