George Loewenstein's article, "Out of Control: Visceral Influences on Behavior" (1996), is discussed. It summarizes the arguments of his article in the thesis that much behavior is nonvolitional or only partly volitional - even in situations characterized by substantial deliberation. Loewenstein's approach is based on the assumption that individuals' actions are affected by visceral factors, which he asserts exert direct hedonic impact and affect the desirability of goods and actions. Loewenstein identifies a central mediating mechanism to account for several described motivational consequences.
