• While the evidence is not complete and sometimes contradictory Mai, after a very comprehensive analysis, concludes that Beethoven had a combination of medical and psychiatric conditions. Besides otosclerosis, medical conditions probably included irritable bowel syndrome, alcohol-induced liver failure, renal papillary necrosis, bronchitis, idiopathic uveitis or scleritis, and possible fibromyalgia.
