• [...] from this perspective, though still of interest, and still worth considering in interdisciplinary context, questions about universal biological processes, the brain, and how to prescribe music in generic ways (I am thinking here of the various discussions on the Mozart Effect) seem less interesting than questions about the diversification of custom and thus, comparisons between humans or, indeed, animals (who are also granted a social and cultural history). The social cannot, in short, be reduced fully to the biological, and music is not the message but the medium.\nMusic, in other words is not a tool or adaptive strategy, nor is it a medium for conveying information: it is a medium within which to live and it does not 'act' upon its listeners but rather its effects are generated through the ways in which it comes to be appropriated by actors.Martin's focus here is akin to that of Antoine Hennion who, with various colleagues at the École des Mines in Paris, has described how actors are involved in various minute practices that empower music so that it comes to 'have power' over them-the very passion (and passivity in the face) of music is something that we prepare, akin in fact to the crafting of many other things in human life-our evening meal, for example.
