Johnston examines the ancient ritual of animation and argues that , pace Faraone and Steiner, the formal practice of ritualized animation developed only late in Greek and Roman antiquity, under a particular set of circumstances and within a particular intellectual climate--namely the Platonizing religious system called theurgy. She uses her reconstruction of ancient rituals of animation and the motives behind their invention as a jumping off point to make some observations not only about how they work, but about how ancient rituals should be studied.
