• Intellectually, the erosion of such trust, in Lessing's times and our own, is evidenced fourfold: by attempts to prove religious doctrine in the light of Enlightenment canons of rationality, attempts to debunk religious doctrine in the same light, attempts to reassert and valorize an utterly irrational "faith" in dogma and authority (one not open to the above defeating conditions of sincerity), and perhaps, lastly, attempts to project a new religion of humanity, which would have to include Lessing's own apparent attempt in "The Education of the Human Race." [...] to return to the interpretative dilemma Pizer posses, I cannot claim my interpretation of Nathan to be the correct interpretation.
