During the past few centuries, religion has lost more and more of its impact on the everyday life of the individual and society. This development forms a certain paradigm, and sometimes exegetes of the OT seem to use this paradigm for the description of the relationship between secular and cultic matters: that belonging to cult and religion is regarded as "very old," while elements of profane life are seen as the result of a process of secularization. In his detailed and clearly organized study, Volker Wagner is able to demonstrate that it was just the other way around. His main hypothesis is that the writings of the OT mirror a development of society in Israel and Judah during which profane matters of life outside of the temple more and more became sacred; that is, they were designed by religious belief (p. 10).
