The use of τοῦτο µέν/δέ as a discourse marker in Classical Greek ('on the one hand on the other') is traditionally regarded as equivalent to the 'adverbial' uses of τ? µέν/δέ and τ? µέν/δέ. The choice of one or the other expression has remained virtually unexplained and, at most, it has been ascribed to the stylistic freedom of individual authors. This paper updates the traditional view by showing that 'adverbial' τοῦτο µέν/δέ is pragmatically and semantically distinct from 'adverbial' τ? µέν/δέ, and by arguing that the 'adverbial' use of τ? µέν/δέ was not fully grammaticalized in fifth- and fourth-century Greek. 'Adverbial' τοῦτο µέν/δέ is the only true discourse marker among these expressions; its use depends on the communicative and rhetorical aims of the text, and differences in this respect are better explained as a feature of register variation than one of idiolectal variation.
