Schilling discusses the ways in which 3 prominent French intellectuals writing after 1945 chose to describe the limits of the possible under the aegis of everyday life, namely Fernand Braudel, Henri Lefebvre, and Michel de Certeau. Among other things, he demonstrates that he postwar turn in France toward the category of thought took place in response as much to the internal state of local disciplinary formations as found in the economic and social history for Braudel, dialectical sociology for Lefebvre, and reflexive anthropology for Certeau.
