  • Objectives. To assess the dynamics of structural transformation and expression of the CD68 and Ki-67 markers in the thymus in rats at different time points after single exposures to whole-body irradiation at a sublethal dose. Materials and methods. The thymus was studied in 30 rats at 3, 7, 14, and 30 days after experimental irradiation at a dose of 5 Gy, using histological, morphometric, and immunohistochemical methods (for the markers Ki-67 and CD68). Results. “Inversion” of the layers of the thymus was seen on post-irradiation day 3, with a reduction in the relative area of cortical material (by 15.1% compared with controls) and depletion of its cell population on the background of a significant increase in the expression of the Ki-67 and CD68 markers in the subcapsular zone (by 71.3% and 242.1% compared with controls, respectively). Gradual recovery of the histoarchitecture and cell populations of the thymus occurred at subsequent experimental time points, due to proliferative activity of thymocytes in the subcapsular zone, with no change in the expression of the CD68 marker. Conclusions. The greatest levels of morphological transformations of the thymus were seen on post-irradiation days 3 and 7, with recovery of the histoarchitectonics and cell populations of this organ by experimental day 30.
