  • African American protests from the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and 1960 student sit-ins to the 1965 voting rights marches and 1966 open housing demonstrations were forerunners of and served as models for protests by women, students, anti-war/peace activists, Latina/o Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, gays and lesbians, welfare recipients, migrant farm workers, prisoners and other marginalized groups in the United States (Morris 1984; Giddings 1984;Barnett 1989a, 1990, 1993;Payne 1990, 1995). Transforming the Academy I The academic inclusion of and focus on the lives and experiences of African Americans were central demands of Black college students in the 1960s and 1970s at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), such as Howard University and Jackson State University, as well as predominately White universities (PWUs), such is Columbia University and San Francisco State University.
