Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • The Joy Luck Club was started by four immigrant Chinese women in San Francisco who had suffered "unspeakable tragedies" but who still wanted to fill their lives with joy (and food). Each one of these women sat at one corner of a mah jong table. After they played mah jong, they ate specially prepared foods (even though they were all quite poor) and told stories about the past and the hoped-for future. The novel opens as one of the daughters, Jing-Mei Woo, is asked to substitute for her mother, who has just died. Through Jing-Mei's eyes, as well as through the eyes of the six other characters, a picture of the process of adjusting to the United States for different generations of Chinese women emerges.
