The homily for the fourth Sunday in Advent in the "Northern Homily Cycle," composed circa 1300, is used to address the issue of highway sanctuary in medieval England. It is argued that both this homily and passus XVII of the B text of "Piers Plowman" preserve an echo from the native legal tradition.
