  • A considerable proportion of biopolymer damages in the cell induced by ionizing radiation are produced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during water radiolysis. It was established that, among all biomacromolecules, proteins are the key and most sensitive target of the hydroxyl radical (OH[dot]), the most reactive ROS. In addition, the content of proteins in cells (approximately 15%) is higher than the content of other biopolymers. It is believed that protein oxidation by free radicals underlies cell aging and induces a number of human diseases. However, the role of ionizing radiation induced oxidative damages of proteins in the development of oxidative stress in cells has been insufficiently studied.
