  • Characteristics of ethical investment decision-making suggest ethical investors may be demographically different from ordinary investors. A survey of equity investors in Australia compares the average investor and an ethical investor. Ethical investors, when compared with the population of Australian equity investors, are distinguished by financial and demographic variables. Preliminary results indicate a marked gender effect, with ethical investors being mainly female, young and degree or higher-degree educated. There is also a marked wealth effect, with ethical investors tending to hold small portfolios consisting of only a few stocks. A major implication of the demographic differences between ethical and ordinary investors is that equity fund managers seeking to expand their ethical investment portfolios will need to appeal to younger women investors, or to promote ethical investment more strongly to male investors.
