  • The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeirz MOCAA) and the Silo Hotel are recent additions to Cape Town, South Africa's V&A Waterfront, replacing a grain silo complex that closed its doors in 2001. Constructed from 1923-1924, the silo was then the tallest building in Cape Town. Silo operations began in 1924 with a capacity of 30,000 tons, including the grading, weighing, cleaning, storing, and handling of grain and other food products. With the introduction of the grain elevator, South Africa was able to double its grain exports. The original structure was constructed using materials and methods available in the early 1920s -- structural steel and concrete reinforced with built-up steel sections and both flat and round reinforcement bars. The working house is approximately 17 by 31 m in plan and 58 m tall.
