Harker discusses cornetist Louis Armstrong's fascination with the clarinet and how he had become captivated with the playing style of the instrument. His experimentation with clarinet style blurred the boundaries between the traditional roles of clarinet and cornet, and in turn between the musical functions of obbligato and melody, solo and lead. His influence of the clarinet is audible in its earliest recordings made with King Oliver in 1923 and Fletcher Henderson in 1924 and 1925.
