  • Becker allows us to glimpse the severity of the Depression, the camaraderie enjoyed by indigent artists, the easy and respectful appreciation of black culture, the Project's ability to enable artists to work and develop, and, finally, that government aid to art can be good, an enhancement of creativity and the public weal. At the International Exhibition of Lithography and Wood Engraving at the Chicago Art Institute in 1937-1938, 374 works from around the world were exhibited-of these, 62 were shown through the courtesy of the Federal Arts Project/WPA, a very respectable representation. Becker also exhibited at a Federal Art Gallery on 57th Street in 1939, in a show featuring 99 graphic prints by a host of artists working in a variety of styles and genres. After World War II and the expansion of colleges and universities (largely as a result of the GI Bill, another government "intervention" and support of the needy), many of the people in the programs, like Fred Becker, went on to teach, a means of support impossible in the Depression.
