• “Epideictic” has often been used as a synonym for panegyric, the poetry (or oratory) of praise, yet early modern writers and readers were equally aware of, and trained in, the techniques of dispraise. David Colclough traces the history of rhetorical vituperation in early modern England and suggests how an alertness to the importance of this history can help us to understand how early modern readers and writers perceived the function of libels.
