- George Eliot's "Daniel Deronda" is critiqued. Although Eliot's elevation of marriage into a type of spiritual and social commitment, coupled with an exaltation of the feminine, seems to move in the direction of increased respect for women, in the end Eliot was limited to the very terms of her attempted transcendence.
