Greenberg discusses the declination of American literary culture. He tells that English literature, American literature--all Western literature--have their origins in the ancient Jewish, Greek, and Roman poets. For Americans conscious of the thinness of their own literary culture, foreign literature had a special attraction and an eternal fact always demands fresh understanding from people. Moreover, he compares contemporary American novels often give the impression that their authors were born yesterday while novelists today have a lot of technical knowledge of myriad objects and equipment that fill the American space to overflowing.
