Milder associates his project with Thomas Carlyle's notion of the literary career defining the author's "ideal outline of himself," eschewing the political and social readings proliferating in Melville scholarship since the late 1980s for an approach that privileges psychoanalytic-inflected biography and literary history. Of course, Melville's literary career hardly received consistent ratification from American or English readers, and Milder's book offers a subtle and persuasive biographical profile of its highs and lows, from the impulses to write, the exultations of literary production, and the dreams of artistic connection with readers and other writers, to the disappointments of critical and commercial failure as well as the disconnections of Melville's family life.
