Benjamin Disraeli's novels 'Coningsby' and 'Tancred' and George Eliot's novel 'Daniel Deronda' are self-conscious in their discussion of nationalism and support the theory that nationalism is a basis for all novels. Daniel Deronda discovers his Jewish nature and by the end of the novel is headed for Jerusalem to become part of a spiritual nation. Similarly, Disraeli invokes a theory of racial essences to deflect English antisemitism. Neither Disraeli nor Eliot is able to make their characters live without reference to some sort of nationalistic background even though both emphasize Jewish over white superiority.
