• The 44th Angouleme International Comics Festival had an uphill battle for redemption to fight right from its start. The previous year's was a public relations disaster thanks to a series of unfortunate decisions made by the Festival directors in response to a variety of criticisms that surfaced over the course of the event. Not even the collective strength of individual exhibitions, which included retrospectives devoted to "Morris" (the Belgian cartoonist Maurice de Brevere best known for his work on Lucky Luke), the controversial French artist/editor/critic Jean-Christophe Menu, Italian maestro Hugo Pratt, and the godfather of Hong Kong independent comicsLi Chi-Tak, could counter the bitter aftertaste of the embarrassing damage control spun by the Festival's Director general Franck Bondoux.
