• The use of symbols in the arts dates back to the Paleolithic period. We can track and identify symbols as part of art practice from those times till today. Art history has traced within a chronological sequence the use of symbols and how they have been visually developed for various religious, political and social purposes. This research tries to set a timeline for the development of the use of symbols in the world of art. It also presents and analyzes new forms of artistic expression in contemporary Saudi art through the work of the Saudi artist Abdul-Nasser Gharem in particular, by monitoring his artistic practice of expressing ideas and concepts symbolically. The importance of this research lies in shedding light on the use of symbols as expressions of artistic characteristics in the works of art and highlighting the role of the symbolic method in freeing the artist from the political, religious and social constraints.
