Quicksand, while disrupting any sense of the inexorableness of racial stratification and identification, not only highlights that being identified as black in the United States meant to be a mendicant, according to dominant definitions, but also literalizes- through Helga Crane's tragic end- that being a black woman meant, in a profound sense, to be a beggar's consort, doubly removed from full subjecthood.14 The novel ends with its very respectable and middle class protagonist reduced to poverty, reproduction, and domesticity.
