Reading Kleist's texts in their socio-political context of production, and anchoring textual analysis in central political and social issues of the time, Griffiths's study focuses on four central thematic constellations and their relevance to a selection of Kleist's works. Elucidating how selected texts reflect Kleist's responses to the shifting concepts of nation and state, the study is particularly timely in its analysis of the literary responses to the discourses on nation and collective or individual agency in our time of post-national and trans-national identity formations.
