A good many academic studies on Die Judenbuche have been concerned in one way or another with the role and function of Herr von S. But whereas some Droste scholars have judged the Baron with a mixture of respect and affection, others have been looking upon him, more especially in the past three decades, with a somewhat unfavorable eye. Aligned in some measure with the latter viewpoint, this essay sets out to show through a survey of his language, his attitudes, his conduct, and his relations with the other characters, that Herr von S. has been portrayed as a fundamentally unsympathetic figure, and as such may be considered an expression of the limitations of the rural community over which he presides.
