  • Gregor Hens's "Himmelssturz" and Monika Maron's "Endmoränen" construct the conflicted life story of their protagonists through a house project that is indicative of their desires and relationships. This essay delineates the link between house and biographical narrative and its local as well as global ties to contemporary German society. The texts depict, albeit to different degrees, descriptions of American realities that feature America as Germany's polar opposite. The protagonists negotiate their view of difference and future and sense of self by either reaching out to or seemingly rejecting an American Other that appears to torpedo heritage and history. Across topical and generational differences, the novels share not only a close bond between biography and building, but also contribute in a novel manner to the ongoing German-American discourse by embedding it in travel narratives and house stories.
