In a well-written and clearly organized analysis incorporating prior scholarship while at the same time extending far beyond it, Picker examines the mode of expression and developing literary abilities of Annette von Droste-Hulshoff (1797-1848), as reflected in all her works and letters. Close poetic reading and interpretation along with consideration of the secondary literature reveals fantasy that is projected especially in the portrayal of landscape and setting. Including a thorough and precise treatment of the complexity of narrative perspective in Die Judenbuche, Pickar reveals in the third chapter the development of Droste's fantasy as she shifts between the participatory and the observatory mode, projecting herself as a voice and assuming a persona pursuant to strategies that grant her increased freedom of expression.
