A shared experience for non-Germans in Germany is the generational effort toward total integration into German society to the point of denying cultural identity. The effort is more often than not thwarted. No rejection is more terrible than that of the Jews, who personified the Other. Coming to terms with the previous generation's efforts at drastic assimilation requires separation from that gaze which created the image of the Other and to locate a site where the gaze is one of indifference. It is only there where freedom to be is found.
