Callahan discusses Charles Chesnutt's 1928 novel "The Quarry." In the novel, Chestnutt combines the themes of passing and adoption to create what might be called an anti-passing novel--one that not only opposes passing but also inverts the expected tropes of the passing novel by having a white man pass for black.
