The presentation will briefly highlight several ways that archaeologists working in the Ancient Near East are advancing understanding of the deep-time cultural roots of the Anthropocene, for example by their research into the origins of domestication of plants and animals; the replacement of wilderness by farming during the Neolithic; humans as ecosystem engineers; the scaling up of human agency through technology; the role of elites in bringing about socio-political and environmental changes; the environmental footprints of imperial policies; the archaeology of the rise of capitalism; the archaeological "signatures" of the "great transformation"; the story of the entanglement of people and things; the deeptime history of extreme events and disasters; and finally, lessons for today regarding human resilience and survival.
