• The article draws on a single map (published 1863–1924). The author first introduces the particular place of production, the Perthes’ map editing house in Gotha, then examines the map’s contents as well as the fact that it became a bestseller. Reading the Chart meant “reading the world”, she claims, critically discussing the different possible interpretations of contemporary global entanglements that were spotlighted by the map that is treated here, as a “global thing” at its best.
