During the Nineteenth Century, the Bible became a quotidian and globally available commodity. Bible societies and mission organizations distributed Bibles in all parts of the world, Protestant missionaries and especially local interpreters and intermediaries translated parts of the Bible in various, sometimes newly discovered languages while at the same time the global history of the Bible was challenged by new findings in archeology and biblical criticism. The article argues that these dynamics were deeply intertwined and contributed to a process through which the Bible itself was shaped as a global Protestant object.
