  • Explores the theme of clothing in Yezierska's short stories "America and I" and "How I Found America," in her novel "Salome of the Tenements," and in her autobiographical writings. Observes that while "ready-made" garments are praised in the works of Yezierska's Jewish contemporaries as a symbol of economic power and respectability, she presents clothing as a symbol of an American economic system that exploits the needy. Looks at Yezierska's portrayal of her own negative experiences in American factories as a producer of fine clothing, comparing it with the theme of clothing as a commodity in her two short stories.
