Simpson discusses Anzia Yezierska's novel "Bread Givers" (1925) which was inspired by the life of Jews in the ghetto of New York City's lower east side in the 1920s. He argues that this work provides the ideal text with which to examine the consolidation of ethnic whiteness in that decade.
