Israel Zangwill's play The Melting Pot opened in Washington, DC, in 1908, crystallizing and celebrating a view of American ethnicity with origins in the eighteenth century. This critique explores the implications for national identity in Zangwill's play as well as Emma Lazarus's concept of the "golden door" from her 1883 poem "The New Colossus."
