- Contemporary literary critics have placed immigrant and acculturated Jewish women novelists in opposition to one another. Batker argues that reading immigrant and acculturated Jewish women's fiction together and in the context of immigrant aid allows for a more complex understanding of the assimilation process and of Jewish women writers' political negotiations over ethnic, racial, class, and gender positioning in the US.
