Shapiro explores the autobiographical relationship between Yezierska and John Dewey and the fictional relationships between her Jewish heroines and their gentile lovers. Shapiro finds these relationships similar to those imagined in other Jewish-American literature between Jewish men and gentile women--and unsuccessful for the same reasons also.
